Crop Wild Relatives for a sustainable fruit production in Europe (Project)

...It will rely on an interdisciplinary consortium in which members will work together to improve (1) the monitoring of CWRs in Europe (and associated countries), (2) the archiving and sharing of local usage and knowledge, (3) the characterization of such species for a future use in breeding programs, a better capitalization of their potential benefits and for a more sustainable conservation, bridging together scientists, stakeholders, civic representatives, local farmers and conservatories’ curators....

An in silico/in vitro hybrid method using inducible Estrogen/Androgen receptors (ER-α/AR-β) to screen EDCs from tattoo inks/PMU (Project)

...Obj. 1 QSAR toolbox pre-screening of potential pleiotropic classification of tattoo colorants into EDCs category. As a first step, we will categorize tattoo pigments/PMU into EDCs catgory based on their binding ability with different hormone receptor. Obj. 2 In chemico experimental binding using Microscale Thermophoresis (MST) to measure binding affinities of colorants flagged in QSAR as EDCs. ...

Improving animal welfare of goats in the stable and on the pasture (Project)

...The stable and the pasture needs to fulfil the a) demands of the animals, b) makes the needs to make the work for the staff easy and c) does not harm the environment. This is not easy in practice. ...Methods of knowledge transfer like  'stable schools' of 'online decision trees' are tested. - Goats need more space in-door as defined in the EU organic standards (1.5 sqm). 2.5 sqm are fine. - The out-door run is ok with 2.5 sqm but even not necessary (1.5 sqm would be enough), especially if summer grazing is possible. - Grazing needs good animal and pasture management. if this is done, yields / profitability is given and parasite risks are minimized. - Shrub hedges can improve animal welfare and nutrition and do not reduce milk yields, if not more than 10% of the daily intake. - Dam related kid rearing can improve animal welfare, reduce mortality and dispite this be economically. - The polling of goats is not necessary, as long as space, the equipment of the stables and pastures are suitable and the management adapted. - Climbing and resting space in the stable is good. - Feeding equipment must be available that does not harm the animals, allows easy and always access for all animals, and the are not desturbed by other goats or dogs. - Selection of feed stuff is one of the principle behaviors and has to be fullfilled. - Ear tags have to be attached, that they can not ripped out. - Fences should be in a manner that animals can not be entangled....

Collaborative project: Field study on vaccination against boar taint. Scientific monitoring of the 100,000 boar project to evaluate immunocastration as an alternative to non-anaesthetic piglet castration (Project)

...The focus of the investigations is on two essential aspects: (1) Evaluation of the meat of vaccinated animals as a basis for quality-based payment. ...Three work packages are planned. AP.1 deals with the evaluation of carcasses at the production stages of slaughter and processing. ...For this purpose, first, the associated partner companies Ponnath, Kemper and Kaufland Fleischwaren will test internally the processing of meat from animals treated with Improvac, which originate from the data pool of AP.2. Independent sensory tests will then be carried out to prove that the meat of immunocastrates can be processed without restrictions (i.e. without disadvantages for consumer acceptance)....
