Identification and prevalidation of hepatocellular biomarkers for detection and prediction of carci-nogenic effects of chemicals (part 1) (Project)

Assessment of the health risk posed by chemicals is based on exposure analysis and on the performance and evaluation of toxicity testing in animals. However, this traditional approach of toxicity testing involves a number of problems. In particular, long-term testing to detect carcinogenic effects is rather time-consuming and raises ethical problems. Unless mechanistic data are established...

Determination of the origin of hormones in cattle by Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (ISOSTER (Project)

The EU-Commission is funding the ISOSTER project (G6RD-CT-2001-00616) in the 5th Framework Programme (Growth Programme). The co-ordination of the project is task of the BfR. Nine partners from Germany, United Kingdom, France and The Netherlands take part in project, which has a duration of 4 years.

Hydrolysis of flavouring substances (Project)

Sometimes there are no or only a few toxicity data available for food components. Especially in cases in which there is no basis to request data by law, the project is intended for contributing such data. The hydrolysis of carboxylic acid esters which are used as flavouring substances is to be considered for safety evaluation of these flavourings.

FOR 409: Impact of microorganisms on soil texture of anthropogenic soils (Project)

In the second period of the project we focus on the influence of microbial communities on soil texture and dynamics of organic matter. The main emphasis will be put on investigations with regard to the impact of microorganisms on water repellence of urban soil and microbial immobilization and mobilization of soil components and organic pollutants.

FOR 409: Mobilisation mechanisms of colloids in urban soils and their relevance for the leaching of pollutants (Project)

Recent studies emphasize the relevance of colloid-bound transport of pollutants in soils. Elevated Na concentrations of the soil solution and extreme drying and re-wetting cycles might increase the dispersibility and stability of colloids in urban soils. The water regime of urban soils, being characterized by a high proportion of preferential flow, increases the risk of the break-through of...

Development of clean-up procedures for food samples as preparation of GC/C/IRMS measurements (Project)

Within the scope of an EU-project (ISOSTER) methods for the analysis of steroids in different matrices of cattle were developed. The tests thereby carried out are the basis for further investigations in regard to establishing purification procedures. Additionally the possibility of an expansion of this new methodical approach on other areas (e.g. metabolism studies) should be checked out.

Preparation of Reference Material for the Performance of Proficiency Tests to achieve the Purpose of the Detection of Marine Biotoxins (Project)

Ciguatoxin derivatives are formed by tropical algae. They easily climb up the marine food chain and accumulate in predatory fish. The consumption of that kind of fish can cause poisoning in humans and even death in certain cases. Since such type of fish finds a ready market that is still growing, the development of a detection method as a precaution for consumer’s health protection seems...
