Agrifood Research and Technology Centre of Aragón (Institution)
...The activity of the Horticulture Department focuses on a) maintenance and management of plant genetic resources in genebanks, b) plant breeding and c) optimization of plant production. Current projects include the selection of new cultivars and rootstocks, the recovery of old germplasm, the evaluation of commercial cultivars, and the study of genetic and physiological processes affecting production. ...

Large Language Models analysis for automatic FoodEx2 codification (Project)
...The aim of the project is to explore Large Language Models (LLMs) for the codification of foods in the FoodEx2 system using textual descriptions. This will be based on experience feedback from existing ML tools - in particular SCA - used by EFSA and Member States for FoodEx2 codification (or classification of foods in other relevant nomenclatures) and improved for model training and testing purposes by integrating external food databases containing FoodEx2 or other relevant codification nomenclatures....

Optimised codends for an ecologically and economically sustainable brown shrimp fishery in the North Sea (CRANNET) (Project)
...The aim of this study is to determine the catchability as well as the species- and size-selectivity of different mesh types (T0, T 90, square meshes) and mesh openings in the codend. ...

Mass spectrometric characterisation/identification of microbial pathogens of Vibrio spp. '2010: Yersinia enterocolitica' (Project)
...PCR techniques are faster than biochemical methods and are often used for subtyping pathogenic bacteria, e.g. the virulotyping, MLST, MLVA, etc. The MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for identification of bacteria is a newly developed method that is well suited for species identification (see attached report). However, the technique also offers opportunities for further differentiation, e.g. identifying biovars, serovars and pathovars. We want to apply the technique for Vibrio and Yersinia, in order to differentiate e.g. environmental and pathogenic strains....

SFB/TRR 38: Project A2: Interactions between soil solution and mineral surfaces: significance for initial element cycling (Project)
...On the one hand, processes of mineral weathering result in a source function, e.g. for nutrients. On the other hand, the development of reactive mineral surfaces and sorption capacity as well as complexation reactions may increasingly result in a sink function, e.g. for dissolved organic matter. ...We hypothesize that in the initial phase these processes and interactions preferentially occur along existing and developing structures and patterns (e.g. preferential flow paths, surfaces of aggregates and soil skeleton, rhizosphere)....

Proteomic investigations into 2-MCPD and 2-MCPD-distearate-induced effects after 28-days subacute oral treatment in rats (Project)
...Recent studies revealed that the foods mentioned above may also contain significant amounts of 2-MCPD fatty acid esters. In vivo, these related compounds might also undergo hydrolysis to release free 2-MCPD. Unpublished results point to similar toxicity of 2-MCPD compared to 3-MCPD (Marchesini, unpublished study report). No such studies exist for 2-MCPD esters. In order to complete risk assessments for 3-MCPD, 2-MCPD and their esters, further toxicological studies are required. ...

Joint research project: Regional Greenhouse Gas Fluxes in Systems with Grass-Clover and Wheat Crop Sequence (Project)
...There is a lack of data regarding the impact grass-clover cropping on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from crop ssequences. The project aimed to derive N2O emission factors for grass-clover and wheat crop sequences. Emission factors are used to estimate N2O emission in dependence on nitrogen input. Specific project aims were measurement and modelling of N2O fluxes in the central part of the organic farming crop sequences: grass-clover, incorporation of grass-clover and the following wheat in comparison to conventional cropping of winter wheat. Farm specific methods of grass-clover incorporation were investigated and compared regarding their effect on crop yield an potential for mitigation of N2O emission. 4 field trials were established in different regions of Germany, comprising rotations with grass-clover followed by wheat in different treatments. ...

Nutrition and intestinal microbiota (Project)
...The interactions between nutrition and intestinal mikrobiota are influencing the human organism in a multitude of ways (e.g. intestinal barrier function, energy metabolism). The research work regarding intestinal microbiota consider the physiological effects of microbial metabolites (e.g. short-chain fatty acids) of food constituents and endogenous microbial metabolites (e.g. antimicrobial peptides) as well as direct effects of intestinal bacteria in humans (e.g. immune system). ...

Nutritional aspects of traditional and innovative pulse products (Project)
...In this project, traditionally prepared legumes (T-HF) (e.g. lentil stew) and innovative products made from HF flour (M-HF) (e.g. pasta, extrudates, snacks) are to be compared chemically and nutritionally (in vivo and in vitro), as these contain most of the HF ingredients. As processed products made from aqueous HF extracts (E-HF) are also available on the market (e.g. for milk alternatives), which contain many watersoluble ingredients of HF, these should also be examined comparatively in vitro. ...
