Collaborative project: Improved assessment of the greenhouse gas emission reduction by catch crops in arable crop production and development of an advisory tool for more precise nitrogen fertilization after catch crop cultivation – subproject 6 (Project)

...On sandy soils with maize cropping sequences prone to leaching losses (Kiel, Uelzen), direct N2O emissions from CC could be compensated by reduced indirect emissions from NO3 leaching, lower N fertilizer need and long-term carbon sequestration (best effect: oilseed radish, saia oat). In sugar beet cropping sequences on loess soils (Göttingen, Stuttgart), higher direct N2O emissions from CC cultivation could not be compensated by positive CC services (fertilizer need, carbon sequestration) (best effect summer vetch). ...On loamy sites, the avoidance of direct N2O emissions should be the focus of the cultivation decision....

WASCAL (West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use). Work Package 2.7 Biodiversity-related ecosystem service provision in managed landscapes (Project)

...Key derived indicators are (1) savanna species indicating the impact of climate change, or land use intensification (qualitative indices), or key ESS and dynamic processes (qualitative measures), (2) landscape metrics referring to habitat parameters (quantitative measures), and (3) land cover and land use indicators synthesizing botanical, zoological, vegetation cover, land use, hydrology and soil data of the landscape matrix (qualitative measures). Main deliverables will be (1) an evaluation of functionally optimized, thus resilient landscape and land use structures, (2) recommendations for effective preservation of biodiversity for enhancing provision of ESS (such as pollination, woody species regeneration) and ESG for sustainable local utilization under changing climate conditions, (3) predictive maps of the suitability and profitability of areas for utilization of important woody species, animal species, and conservation of near-natural habitats in order to develop spatially optimized land management sustaining savanna resilience....

ntegrating the latest research findings into an overall concept for the regulation of downy mildew on onions in ecological farming: varieties, cultivation practices and prospects of use of biocontrol agents (Project)

...The following specific measures are examined: (1) new onion varieties with proven resistance to downy mildew in comparison with best standard varieties, (2) the methods of cultivation 'direct seeding' and 'onion seed (culture on early seedlings)' with selected resistant and standard varieties, (3) the direct control of downy mildew by new biologics in the light of the forecast model ZWIPERO the timing of drug application. ...The following control measures were tested: (1) four new onion varieties (Yankee, Hylander, Hystand und Santero) with proven resistance against downy mildew, (2) the cropping systems ''directly seeded '' and ''transplants’ (seven plants / pot) with the varieties Yankee and Santero as well as Summit, (3) plant extracts of sage and liquorice as well as the microbial agent Aneurinibacillus migulanus for the direct control of downy mildew (in cooperation with the Julius Kühn-Institute in Darmstadt, Germany). ...

Harmonised Data and Services for the European Forest Data Centre (Project)

...eForest is a platform for projects between the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and the „European National Forest Inventory Network“ Consortium (ENFIN). eForest aims in supporting and enhancing the basic knowledge of the European Forest Data Centre (EFDAC) The implementation of EFDAC supports data hamonisation, publishing of harmonised data, espacially for international commitment needs, i.e.: - Ministerial Conference of theProtection of Forest in Europe(MCPFE) - FAO Global Forest ResourcesAssessment (GFRA) - UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Within this Framework Contract further Special Contracts will be established. ...These SCs focus on special tasks and approaches, i.e.: SC3 to SC8 – feasibility studies to use NFI data to enhance european forest maps, develope maps of species distribution and to implement universal estimation procedures for European harmonised estimates for different regions and visualization of different indicators. ...

Improving protein quality of roughages in ruminant nutrition by using silage additives on the basis of condensated tannins. Subproject 1 (Project)

...Both additives restricted the degradation of true protein linearly when the concentration increased from 0.5 to 3% of DM. The additives Amasil NA, BIO-SIL and tannins limit the proteolysis and the formation of undesired metabolites even in very low dry matter ranges and allow the production of high quality silages. ...

Analysis of the interaction between plants and fungi during colonization (Project)

...With the the cooperative activity of the HOG- and the pacC/pal A-J signal transduction pathways it is ensured that A. alternata can produce alternariol in a broad pH-range. ...Because of the activity of the pacC gene these strains can produce alternariol over a high pH range, also at extreme values. ...
