Quantification of the migration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from various consumer products at regular handling conditions (Project)

Recently, Stiftung Warentest detected high amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in consumer products like hammer grips. As yet no systematic studies have been performed on the issue of how much of the PAH content present in consumer products may leave the material and migrate off at regular handling conditions. There is also no estab-lished and accepted experimental model to address...

Development and evaluation of a method for the detection and quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in consumer products (Project)

Usually, the detection and determination of the amount of a compound (including also sensi-tising compounds) which is released by gas emission from a consumer product is a challenging task. In most cases the total content of the sensitising compound in the product is determined and, in combination with numerical models it is possible to calculate theoretical emissions. The measurement of the...

Mixtures of PAHs in consumer products – Toxicity in human keratinocytes (Project)

The aim of the project is to characterize the toxicity of potentially carcinogenic mixtures of PAHs in human keratinocytes. These compounds are used as plasticizers and soots in cer-tain consumer products. Study parameters are cytotoxicity, induction of cytochrom P450 enzymes and genotoxicity (Comet assay) of the PAH mixtures.

Uptake and cellular localization of nano particles in enterocytes (Project)

The use of nanoparticles as a carrier for bioactive substances in foods is an ongoing method to improve the bioavailability of the substances. To examine the cellular uptake of metal oxid nanoparticles in the intestine appropriate enterocytic cell cultures will be used. Important is a comparison of the different ways into the body. Furthermore, the intracellular localization of the NPs will be...

Determination of the exposition of consumers with residues of malachite green and leucomalachite green from eels accounting for the background contamination in aquatic systems (Project)

Malachite green (MG) is a triphenylmethane dye used to color materials such as cotton, silk, leather, and paper. MG is also used as a veterinary drug applied as topical antiseptic or to treat parasites, fungal infections, and bacterial infections in fish and fish eggs. Other applications are uses as biological stain, gain medium, to detect latent blood in forensic medicine, as pH indicator...

Detection and analysis of hepatotoxic modes of action for the prediction of carcinogenic effects of chemicals in the subacute toxicity test (repeated dose 28-day oral toxicity study/ OECD TG 407) (Project)

Using a modified 28-day repeated-dose toxicity test based on OECD TG 407, rats were orally treated with different classes of hepatotoxic and carcinogenic model substances. A selection of 9 substances was established, which was grouped into categories genotoxic and non-genotoxic carcinogens plus hepatotoxic non-carcinogens. After 3, 7 and 28 days, liver tissue was subjected to histopathological...
