FOR 431: Identification of factors limiting fruit set in tomato with the aim of genetic improvement of heat tolerance
Project
Project code: DFG FOR 431
Contract period: 01.01.2004
- 01.01.2007
Purpose of research: Basic research
Poor fruit set of tomato induced by high temperatures is a limiting factor for protected cultivation of tomatoes in Thailand. The overall aim of this project is to analyse the problem of limited fruit set in tomato under high temperature conditions even of heat tolerant genotypes, and to develop methods and strategies for improvement. First, a number of different environmental and agronomical factors will be varied under controlled conditions in Hannover, and their influence on a number of different physiological characteristics in flower and fruit development will be monitored. In a second step, factors and characteristics proven in step one to be important for improved fruit set will be applied and analysed, respectively, in an experiment in Thailand. From both experiments recommendations and procedures to increase the fruit set will be developed. Subsequent objective is a systematic solution by means of genetic improvement of heat tolerance. This requires information on the inheritance of the characteristics identified as being crucial for the development of fruits.
