The acronym PLANT-KBBE stands for: 'Transnational PLant Alliance for Novel Technologies – towards implementing the Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy in Europe' (PLANT-KBBE) and represents the continuation of a common international funding initiative between France, Spain and Germany, which has been originally implemented as so-called 'Trilateral Activity' in the context of two 'Calls for Proposals' in 2004 and 2006.
National funding partners are the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) in France, the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) in Spain as well as the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in Germany. Meanwhile the circle of funding partners has been extended by Portugal (on the occasion of the Calls in 2009 and 2010), represented by the national funding agency FCT (Fundação para a Ciênca e a Tecnologia).
Superior purpose of the PLANT-KBBE funding initiative is the implementation as well as continuation of transnational research projects between research groups and enterprises of the partner countries mentioned above, with the objective of further deepening the already existing cooperation between economy and science in and between these countries. In the framework of PLANT-KBBE especially small and medium enterprises (SME) are addressed and concurrently encouraged to be involved in the composition of project ideas as a leading partner. However, with this funding activity also research institutions and businesses from other countries are explicitly addressed, because they can be associated to existing transnational consortia of the partners mentioned above, provided that they introduce their own funds into the collaboration.
