Importance of the corky ring spot disease of consumption potatoes for the provision of high-quality raw materials for the food industry
Project
Project code: JKI-EP-08-2279
Contract period: 01.11.2016
- 30.09.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research
The corky ring spot disease caused by Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) has caused massive problems in potato cultivation within the last few years. Particularly in the years 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014 potato tubers with a high extent of internal symptoms such as mottling or necrotic local lesion were found. In addition necrotic ringspots or line patterns occurred on the tuber surface. In susceptible cultivars, first symptoms were often found already in the middle to end of July, whereby the infestation continued until harvest as well as in storage. In years with severe infestation, over 50% of the tubers showed symptoms. This resulted in high quality losses up to complete rejection from the market. The objective of the project is to develop environmentally friendly and practice-oriented solutions against the Tobacco rattle virus and its vectors, the trichodorid nematodes.
