Effects of a PH3 fumigation on the VOC profile of sunflower seeds and the behavior of stored product pest
Project
Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-1353
Contract period: 01.01.2016
- 31.12.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research
The project aims to investigate the following questions: Which effects does a Phosphine (PH3) fumigation have on the VOC profile of sunflower seeds?; Are the observed changes of the VOC profile of quantitative or qualitative nature?; Does it affect the terpenoid biosynthesis and the fatty acid metabolism of the sunflower seeds?; Do the observed changes in the VOC profile also affect the behavior of stored product pest?; Are fumigated goods more attractive for stored product pests?; The first set of experiments will deal with the Red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum which is an important pest in sunflower seeds (Hagstrum & Subramanyan, 2009). We will furthermore investigate which components of the total scent boquet are perceived by T. castaneum.
