Chair for Microbial Ecology
Institution
Section overview
Description
Fundamental research concentrates on the functional genomics and evolution of bacterial pathogens. Several research groups in the department work on Listeria monocytogenes, Yersinia enterocolitica and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli as well as on pseudomonads.
Applied research is performed in close cooperation with the food industry, with a focus on the biodiversity and functionality of food borne microbial consortia, including identification of bacteria and yeasts and description of novel taxa. During this research a large microbial strain collection comprising more than 12.000 strains has been compiled.
The Department of Microbiology runs a microbial diagnostics unit, connected with a consulting service for the food industry with respect tp prevention and analysis of microbiological quality assurance problems.
