Monitoring and methods to control the planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus and the bacterial disease ´SBR´ in sugar beet
Project
Project code: A/22/08
Contract period: 01.10.2022
- 31.03.2025
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: SBR, Syndrome Basses Richesses, planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus, bacteria
The Syndrome Basses Richesses ("SBR" = syndrome of low sugar content) is a bacteriosis of sugar beet that has spread rapidly in numerous growing areas in recent years. It is accompanied by severe losses in yield and quality. The pathogen is transmitted by the planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus whose life cycle is strongly adapted to agricultural crop rotations of sugar beet and winter wheat. Starting in France and later Baden-Württemberg, SBR also has spread further in Bavaria in 2020. So far, no effective control options are known in practice. According to current knowledge, the cicadas cannot be adequately controlled with standard applications of foliar insecticides. The Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry (StMELF) is therefore funding a research project to develop control strategies that focus on alternative methods and agricultural processes.
