This research proposal focusses on the utilization of the actually unused, mostly coarse and often colored wool of sheep living in Germany in order to receive a valuable and local resource. This is necessary because of the very low commercial value of German wool. Sales proceeds do not even cover the expenses of the shearing resulting in the loss of at least a third of German wool due to the lack of suitable product applications and marketing strategies. Regarding growing demands on the transparency of supply chains as well as on emission savings of CO2, the regional production of raw materials and the processing in the textile sector becomes increasingly important. In order to create the possibility to market German wool, a system for the recording, collection, quality assessment and sorting of the wool in whole Germany has to be developed and validated. Consequently, a suitable, utilizing and value-adding network will be formed, starting from the production of the fibers in agriculture up to the textile final product. In distinction to the state of the art, an environmentally friendly process will be developed for the utilization of these wool fibers. Afterwards processes for the production of yarns or textile areas will be adapted for the new material and examples for products will be developed. At present, there is a lack of capacities for wool scouring as first finishing step. Therefore, alternative technologies for wool scouring will be determined, developed and adapted for industrial applications.
