Food phytochemicals matter for cardiometabolic health (FoodPhyth)
Project
Project code: MRI-OG-08-626 1060 FOODPHYTH, 2819ERA11F
Contract period: 01.01.2020
- 31.07.2023
Budget: 279,282 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
FoodPhyt aims at raising awareness and understanding of the enormous potential of food phytochemicals (FPCs) to support the global fight against obesity and associated cardiometabolic diseases. An explosion of research is demonstrating the health benefits of plant-based diets, specific plant foods and phytochemicals. However, the scientific data published on this are not always consistent, partial scattered and challenging to evaluate. The first objective of FoodPhyt is to make consolidated knowledge available on metabolism, cardiometabolic health effects and mechanisms of action of FPCs and plant foods in the open-access database PhytoHub, from critical review of the literature by experts. This database will be designed to fit the needs of many types of end-users, e.g. politics and consumers. The second FoodPhyt objective is to validate biomarkers of plant food consumption, to develop a method for quantitative determination of these markers and to harmonize analytical methods (metabolomics) for comprehensively assess the exposure to FPCs. FoodPhyt is a multinational consortium of 7 partners from 7 countries and has access to biofluid samples and data from large cohort studies and dietary intervention studies with specific plant foods. In addition, the consortium promotes young scientists in an interdisciplinary area between nutrition, medicine, metabolomics, bioinformatics and food chemistry.
