Production processes

Project code: K/08/18
Contract period: 01.01.2009 - 30.06.2011
Purpose of research: Applied research

Intention of the project is to investigate the possibilities of using Sorghum species for ethanol production. Besides cultivation technique, all process steps from raw material provision to conversion methods are focussed. The project is subdivided in three projet parts. In sub-project 1 'Cultivation technique and crop management' appropriate Sorghum varieties are selected. Demands of Sorghum species on crop management and nutritional requirement are ascertained and influences on the content of useable sugar are examined in glass house, lot and field tests. The aim of sub-project 2: 'Harvest, post-harvest technology, syrup extraction and preparation, conversion' is to investigate low-loss harvesting and supply of Sorghum, a best possible material pulping and an efficient conversion to ethanol. Additionally a logistic concept, aligned with the entire process chain will be worked out, including the use of by-products, such as bagasse. Different bagasse qualities are analysed in sub-project 3 'Thermic utilisation of bagasse' in terms of fuel characteristics and they are examined in combustion trials at a furnace test stand. Thereby combustion parameters, gaseous and particulate emissions as well as bed ash formation tendencies are determined.
