Purpose of research: Applied research
Embedded in a national initiative, which is supposed to lead to a European Project, this study aims at identifying and evaluating agricultural services that increase public welfare and for which farmers receive no payment. Doing so is one step in conveying the importance of agricultural services to the general public in NRW and to identify indicators that could finally be used to start paying for these services. In accordance with EU policy goals stated for rural development in the period 2007-2013, the services that will be analyzed will be in the realm of protection of climate and natural resources as well as of maintaining an attractive countryside and prosperous rural areas.. As it is planned to continue this project later on in a greater European project to the same subject the proposed study will try to identify those aspects of agricultural services that could be especially important to the people of North-Rine-Westfalia. The situation in North-Rhine-Westfalia is characterized by high population density and coexistence of rural and highly developed areas side by side. This situation will define the main focus of the proposed study
