Project code: 2822NIPSI6
Contract period: 01.06.2023 - 31.10.2023
Budget: 14,760 Euro
Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination
Keywords: food security, remote sensing, integrated production systems, small-scale farming, rural development, resource conservation

In the initiation phase of the three-year research project, which will focus on the province of Punjab and investigate how smallholder production systems can be improved in a socially appropriate and ecologically sustainable way, a full proposal including a detailed budget plan will be developed in close coordination with the partners. Based on local knowledge and new technologies, innovative approaches are to be identified, critically evaluated and further developed in a practical way in the main three year project. The initiation phase includes a preparatory research trip to Punjab. In joint team meetings, methodological, financial and administrative issues will be clarified and the procedure for the full proposal will be defined. Consultations with the various stakeholder groups will take place. During the preparatory research trip in June, stakeholder dialogues will be held in Multan and Lahore to present the project idea to policy makers, smallholder representatives and development actors. The principles of the participatory and systemic dialogue approach for the project, MARISCO (adaptive MAnagement of vulnerability and RISk at COnservation Sites), will be discussed in more detail among project team members and possible adaptations identified. In addition, critical feedback on the selected innovations will also be a part of these stakeholder dialogues. Multi-day field visits by the team from HNEE, HI, and representatives from MNSUA and WIT are planned in various districts in southern and central Punjab to select appropriate case study sites and to validate, concretize, and, if necessary, revise the selected innovations for the three empirical research modules of SMALLPAK.
