The 'UFISAMO Subproject 1 - Urban Agriculture in Southern Africa to Improve Food Security and Income Options for Disadvantaged Urban Populations in Maputo, Mozambique and Cape Town, South Africa, investigates means to increase availability, consumption and marketing of diverse, safe and nutritious food through improved production and marketing of crops and animal products. Urban agriculture value chains in disadvantaged urban areas of Maputo and townships of Cape Town are investigated with specific consideration of risks to human health and food safety. Value adding options to improve and diversify the Urban Agriculture systems will be developed proposing minimum standards for food safety and quality during production and sale. The project also analyses food habits, consumer behavior and current systems of food production in Urban Agriculture. Research results will be disseminated via practical on the job capacity building with local farmers, food traders and organizations. The expansion of agricultural research and education networks in Urban Agriculture will support the provision of positive evidence from Urban Agriculture and facilitate the development of policies from grass root level.
