The UFiSAMo - subproject 2 - aims to promote ways of improving the availability of agricultural products produced and marketed under urban conditions by disadvantaged population groups and their environmentally and resource-friendly production. By means of a regional network, the scientific parties involved in production will network in order to contribute to regional capacity building. The project work includes an analysis of urban animal production (especially broilers) along the value chain in Maputo (Mozambique). Challenges will be identified and proposals for solutions are to be worked out with city farmers and disseminated further through training measures. The multiplier organisation is SETSAN (Maputo). Surveys of producers, consumers and politicians on eating habits and behaviour are also to be conducted. The aim is to ensure healthy food production in urban areas without exposure to heavy metals or transmission of zoonoses by animal fertilisers. The establishment of a research and training network on urban agriculture is intended to provide knowledge and further research into aspects of urban agriculture. The results are not only availed to small urban farmers, consumers and NGOs through publications, but also meant to support politicians in shaping the framework conditions for urban agriculture. Starting with a Kickoff-WS at the beginning of 2016, the regions for the field studies will be defined. Semi-annual meetings of all partners at the partner institutions allow control and specification of the project progress.
