Production processes

Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-0039
Contract period: 01.06.2008 - 01.12.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Asparagus officinalis, plant genetic resources

Increasingly, diseases and pests created problems in the asparagus production. It is assumed that between 70 and 100% of asparagus fields in individual regions are contaminated with the asparagus virus AV1. In addition, Fusarium sp. associated diseases and some other fungal disease as well as abiotic factors probably resulting in browning of sprears became more and more important. Resistant varieties are not yet available and the genetic variability of asparagus (vegetable) is relatively limited. Aim of the project is an interspecific crossing programme to improve the genetic basis of resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. Adapted genotypes shall be examined for both resistance towards AV1 and AV2 as well as for technological competence and quality (chemical composition, quality associated compounds and human sensory). The expected results will improve understanding of the asparagus genetics and form a new basis for asparagus breeding in the near future.
