Description
The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology belongs to Pharmaceutical Faculty, but it is also responsible of teaching pharmacology and toxicology, and even clinical pharmacology, to medical students and a number of other students as well. Basic and advanced courses are given also in toxicology. The total number of courses given annually is as high as 30. Brain research has been of main interest in the department, but also drug metabolism has a long tradition. The latest topic is related to discovery of new drug mechanisms. There is a serious effort to limit the main research topics to 3 - 5. The permanent staff is about 25, but there are about 10 reseach fellows working temporarily. The chairman of the department is Risto Juvonen, Professor of Medicinal Toxicology.
