The investigation of the variability in the morphology, the constituents and the genetics of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.)
Project
Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-1266
Contract period: 01.05.2007
- 31.03.2008
Purpose of research: Basic research
Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L., Apiaceae) is an established spice plant in many European countries, in North Africa and in Asia. Leaves, seeds and essential oils prepared from leaves and seeds are all used as spice material, leaves furthermore as vegetables. The species has a wide range of distribution and a formal taxonomic distinction of three subspecies with 10 botanical varieties. The coriander collection of the German ex situ-genebank in Gatersleben covers 457 accessions of more than 60 different areas of origin. The cooperation of BAZ and IPK opens up the possibility to describe the biodiversity on the basis of morphological (leaf shape, colour of flowers, size and shape of the fruits), chemotaxonomical (content and composition of essential oils) and molecular (AFLP) studies and to examine coherences between morphological, chemical and molecular facts. This has not happened yet in this way in the area of secondary plants.
