Pedigree of Erica - species by means of molecular phylogeny
Project
Project code: AZ II-1 F41.2009.02
Contract period: 01.05.2009
- 31.12.2011
Budget: 162,112 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The species Erica are used in plant breeding. 60% of the Erica plants produced in Germany are grown in the region of “Niederrhein”. In order to support the sus-tainability of the Erica – producers, the possibility of cross breeding between Er-ica – species will be improved, by establishing an Erica – species pedigree by means of molecular phylogeny. From the Erica - species described worldwide predominantly the species with economically interesting traits will be included the pedigree.
Furthermore a method of pollen storing will be tested for the Erica. By establish-ing a good method of pollen storing the breeders can cross plants which do not flower at the same time. This might be interesting for cross spring and autumn flowering Erica – species.
