Purpose of research: Basic research

Most models for the turnover of soil organic matter (SOM) include a number conceptual SOM pools. These pools represent fractions with a different degree of stabilization. One main process of SOM stabilization is the physical protection of both decomposable and recalcitrant substances. Therefore a new model concept is to develop for the whole carbon turnover of arable soils exceeding the hitherto existing description of the kinetic of turnover processes. The quantification of the inner soil surface occupied by microbial biomass and the estimation of distribution patterns of SOM and primary mineral particles are main premises to develop the new model. The inner soil surface is to quantify using soil samples of a number of long-term experiments with a wide range of SOM content and contrasting in soil texture. The parameters of the new model are to estimate including results (rate constants, carbon flows, stabilization mechanisms) of other participants of the project. The model is to validate using data of long-term experiments of the EURO-SOMNET database
