Project code: BfR-LMS-08-1342-484
Contract period: 01.03.2013 - 30.09.2013
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

The MIRABEL project consists of four distinct but integrated scientific tasks. The first task corresponds to a field survey to collect data on the peanut allergic consumers’ food consumption habits, their attitudes toward actual precautionary labelling and willingness to pay (WTP) relating to labels depending on allergen concentration limits, and their threshold of allergic reaction. The survey will be designed and implemented by partners 1 (ANSES/DSA), 2 (Inra) and 3 (Allergo-Vigilance Network). The second task corresponds to a field survey to acquire data on peanut contamination of food. Analysed products will be selected in regards of the products declared consumed by peanut allergic sufferers in the survey realized in task 1 and analytical feasibility. The design of the survey will involve partner 1 and it will be implemented by service providers. The task 3 consists of the developments of a probabilistic Bayesian models in order to quantify the risk due to adventitious peanut allergen in food. Then, the model will be applied on the data collected during tasks 1 and 2 and will be used to assess the impact on the risk of different management options. This task is under the responsibility of partner 1. The task 4 consists of the cost-benefit analysis for the different stakeholders (food industry, allergic individuals and regulators). The analysis will be developed with results of the allergic consumers’ behaviour acquired during task 1. This task may include a questionnaire to the food industry in order to better quantify the costs of different allergen risk control procedure. It will be under the responsibility of partner 2. A scientific committee composed of experts in each implied scientific field and an advisory committee composed of the different stakeholders (industrials’ associations, allergic sufferers’ associations, governmental risk managers) will follow the project development (task 0 of coordination). All the tasks will include dissemination activities, mainly through scientific publications. All partners will use any opportunity to communicate the results during the main appropriate congress, workshop and symposium. Vulgarisation syntheses are also to be addressed to the health professionals participating to the recruitment of peanut allergic consumers through the Allergo- Vigilance Network and to allergic sufferers via the journal of the French association for allergy prevention. Tasks 1 and 2 are planned during the 33 first months of the project. Methodological developments of task 3 will start from the beginning of the project in order the model to be validated as soon as the field data are available. The implementation of the model to the data collected and impact study of different management options are planned for the next 15 months of the project, in parallel to the task 4.
