Institute for Biogeochemistry and Marine Chemistry (IfBM)

Institution

Description

Central research topic of the Institute is the study of interactions and biogeochemical cycling of elements in the compartments lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. The dynamic processes of these cycles are investigated under natural as well as anthropogenically affected conditions and at different scales of time and space. The results obtained from these studies on the controlling processes and the variability of element cycling are used for predictions, i.e. for an evaluation of the effects on possible climate changes. This Institute is part of the Department of Earth Sciences under the umbrella of the Faculty of Mathmatics, Informatics and Natural Sciences (MIN). It is involved in several study programs like the B.Sc./M.Sc. Earth Sciences, the international M.Sc. program Integrated Climate System Sciences (ICSS) and the diploma course Geology/Palaeontology (which is currently being phased out). In research, the IfBM is affiliated to the academic Center for Marine and Climate Research (ZMK) of the faculty MIN. As part of the ZMK, the IfBM is also embedded in the Center for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (ZMAW). In this framework it poses a substantial member of the cluster of excellence Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction (CliSAP) and as such it interlinks terrestrial and marine geosciences.
