Optimization of a method for weed management in field vegetable cultivation with a sprayable mulch material based on renewable raw materials (OptiMulch)
Project
Project code: 38758/01-34
Contract period: 01.06.2023
- 31.05.2025
Purpose of research: Applied research
In order to reduce the use of herbicides in vegetable cultivation on fields, a sprayable mulch material of biogenic origin was developed in the MuNaRo project, which biodegrades at the end of its functional life. For this novel method of weed control, the potential for cost reduction is now to be investigated in more detail to design the sprayable mulch material for its use in practice. The focus is on reducing the costs of the individual recipe components, minimising the necessary application rate, as well as on optimizing the application device, e. g. with regard to area productivity, user-friendliness, cleaning and maintenance. The best chances of success are attributed to the novel mulching process as a plastic film substitute in outdoor vegetable growing.
