Improving the comparability of the 'Laender' organic varieties tests with the BSL-project the 'light interception' and baking qualities of winter wheat

Project

Project code: 2809OE010
Contract period: 15.10.2009 - 30.04.2013
Budget: 67,862 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

Project goal Regional organic farming Landessortenversuche with winter wheat – centrally planned and calculated – are supposed to identify and evaluate additional valuable characteristics of wheat varieties. They are supposed to be made aware in agricultural practice and consultation in addition to the descriptive list of varieties of the Bundessortenamt (BSA). Project planning All institutions involved in this project are closely connected to the research group Versuchswesen des Verbandes der Landwirtschaftskammern. It will tie in with the Bundessortenamt’s value analysis by gaining additional information about wheat varieties on overall 25 sites spread throughout Germany, in especially extended test of different varieties using identical selections on all sites. It will be proceeded according to an experimental design which is centrally predetermined. All tests are carried out on acreage which has been used solely for organic farming for years. Seeds are ordered centrally. Additional analysis like the analysis of the amount of gluten in grains, measuring the light transmission (PAR) in crop stands at to characterise the weed suppression of different breeds of organically grown winter wheat and ratings (leaf position and its effect on shading of soil surface) contribute to the improvement of the evaluation of the varieties and their suitability for organic farming considerably. The statistic analyses are carried out centrally to guarantee common standards and prompt results. Optained data are recorded locally in the PIAF-format (Planung, Information, Auswertung, Feldversuchswesen), which is available to all participating institutions, and calculated centrally by the Landwirtschaftskammer Niedersachsen. PIAF is also used by the BSA.
