Validation of a minimum-invasive blood-sampling technique for measuring catecholamines

In this study we validated the possibility of blood sampling with bugs (Dipelogaster maximus; 4th larvae stage) in hens as a stressless and gentle method. The beak of this bug has only 1/30 of a diameter of a cannula. In addition, the bug injects an analgesic substance during the sucking procedure. Therefore we wanted to investigate, if blood sampling with bugs is an appropriate method to analyze catecholamines in hens. As first results it was possible to collect blood with the bugs. The hens showed less or no defending behaviour during the sucking procedure. It was not possible to analyze catecholamines in the blood of hens because of digestion and following denaturation of the hormones.
