Motivation Workshop Forest and Climate - Educational modules for climate protection through forest and wood - MoWaKli

Project

Project code: 28WC5028
Contract period: 01.04.2015 - 31.03.2018
Budget: 1,091,421 Euro
Purpose of research: Public relations

The connection between our forest and our climate is vital to our environment. The objective of the “MoWaKli” project is to strengthen the position of the topic in the curricula of pre-schools as well as primary and secondary schools. For that, we have to raise awareness and motivate school and kindergarten teachers to talk to the chil-dren in their respective institutions about forests and climate. A series of workshops will enable and qualify the educators to transfer the key concepts to an age-appropriate level. The project will also develop a workbook, including a portable app, with ideas, stories, experiments and other tools for a sustainable learning experience. “MoWaKli” will make the participating institutions, children and also parents aware of climate friendly actions and, as a consequence, will lead to a reduction of CO2-emissions by the general public. During the workshop, teachers will learn the necessary facts on forest and climate, as well as methods and ideas on how to develop and organize outdoor lessons in order to teach children “on the ground”. Participants will also be introduced to climate friendly activities that can be used to expand on the project within the institutions. This dual approach is supposed to bridge the gap between the outdoor experience in the forest and the everyday life of children and teenagers. Raising awareness for the implications of our daily consumption on the forest-climate system will highlight the complexity of the issue and support sustainable behavior. The 1.5 day workshops will start with presentations on the following topics: “The importance of nature experi-ences for a healthy child development”, “Basics of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)” and “Forests and climate – A system connected”. In order to build local networks of forest education, the participants will be introduced to a number of potential partner institutions for Forest & Climate projects in schools and kindergar-ten. The main objective of the workshop however, is to teach the participants hands-on methods and activities that have been tried and tested in forest education. The teachers will go into the forest and get the chance to ex-perience the activities and see how they can adapt the concepts for their own work. Experienced experts in forest education will then coach the participants in the development of their own ideas and education concepts. The “MoWaKli” workshops will be supported by a practical handbook “Forests and climate”. The handbook will be available for free to interested teachers and educators from all over Germany to use it in their respective insti-tutions. As a final step, the project will develop a teaching unit (CO2-Seeker/Carbo-Hunter) to address teenagers in secondary schools. In order to make our education material accessible for as many teachers as possible, all materials will be downloadable from the project website.
