Collaborative project: Breeding quinoa for cultivation in Germany - subproject C (QUIZ)
Project
Project code: 281D117C21
Contract period: 01.03.2023
- 28.02.2026
Budget: 204,299 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: agricultural biodiversity, plant genetic resources, ingredients, plant breeding, crop production
The main objective of the project is to develop new quinoa varieties for cultivation in Germany that exceed the yield performance of current varieties, and thus to establish quinoa as a new crop species in diversified agriculture in the long term. This objective will be achieved by identifying the genetic basis of agronomically important traits using genome-wide association study (GWAS) and QTL mapping, and using these to develop markers for marker-assisted breeding. In addition, the prerequisites will be created to make quinoa accessible to modern plant breeding methods. For this purpose, methods of producing doubled haploid (DH) lines as well as a cytoplasmic male sterility system (CMS) will be developed to increase the efficiency of quinoa breeding. Quinoa as a crop species is characterized by high tolerance to environmental stress and high grain quality. To combine and improve these traits in breeding, innovative grain analytical methods with NMR spectroscopy as well as multi-location and -year field trials will be used to breed robust varieties with high product quality, which can then be introduced for the official variety testing process. In summary, we aim to show, using quinoa as an example, that by applying current methods of genomics, haploid technology and phenotyping, previously orphan crops can be developed in a comparatively short time to such an extent that they become interesting for economic cultivation.
