Paradigm shifts in resistance monitoring - employing qualitative aspects for reducing the use of antibotics
Project
Project code: REFORDAT-395
Contract period: 04.04.2018
- 30.09.2019
Budget: 100,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Antibiotic stewardship
The increase of bacterial resistances against antibiotic substances has a major importance in animal and human health, especially multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) are found in human medicine and in livestock. The latter has impact for livestock-exposed humans, animals and for consumers. Today, MDRO are detected on more than 50% of all German pig farms and carbapenemase-producing as well as colistin-resistant Gram-negative pathogens and linezolid- or daptomycin-resistant Gram-positive pathogens were occasionally detected. However the “normal” pathogens are still of importance for veterinarians and farmers and their animals. Furthermore the increase of antibiotic resistances desires a change in paradigm of resistance monitoring – from the general aspect of antibiotic reduction to a qualitative use of antibiotic resistance profiles at the point of first prescription.
