Studies on symptom manifestation in Brassicaceae caused by Alternaria pathogens with special regard to Sinapis spec.

Sinapis-accessions obtained from the genebank of the IPK at Gatersleben will be grown under field conditions in spring and autumn and tested as single plants in the flowering stage against Alternaria brassicicola. Inoculation will be carried out in detached leaves/leaf segments under controlled conditions.Resistant single plants will be selected, propagated by in-vitro-techniques or cuttings and inbred. Single plant progenies will be tested for resistance reaction. With regard to variability in the pathogen as well as in the host, the goal of the project is to contribute to finding out causes of the different symptom expressions. Donors exhibiting stable resistance will be used in genetic analysis and in attempts to transfer resistance into culture forms of Brassicaceae. For the studies particularly Sinapis spec. will be used.
In a three-year-screening-cycle under field conditions (tests in spring and autumn) 123 Sinapis-, 29 Brassica juncea and 30 B. nigra accessions have been tested against Alternaria. Most of the accessions reacted moderately susceptible. Saisonally caused differences in resistance manifestation could be detected. In the progenies of resistant (reaction 0, 1) inbred single plants, resistance reaction of the parents could not be confirmed. From the results obtained it may be concluded that the genetically preformed resistance in the tested material is very instable basing on a quantitative inheritance manner and, in this form, it will not be utilizable in resistance breeding.
