Cooperative breeding of Pear and Cherry in China and Germany

The pear- and cherry production in China is characterized by a high dynamic, especially by the change of strong to dwarfing rootstocks in the growing systems. The availabiltity of adapted varieties is low. China has large problems with biotic and abiotic stress factors and one reason is the high pH of soils in the growing areas. An important pathogen in cherry growing is Blumeriella jaapii, and thererfore, one main topic of cherry breeding at the Institute of Forestry and Pomology in Beijing is the identification of resistance donors and their use in breeding. The institute has a large collection of Prunus species, which shall be evaluated for their suitability as resistance donors in breeding. The Institute for Pomology in Xingcheng City is experienced in pear rootstock and variety breeding and possesses a large collection of Pryus genetic resources. These Material will be considered for the use as resistance donors to bacterial and fungal pathogens and represents the basis for pear rootstock and variety breeding together with advanced breeding clones. One main topic is the improvement of selection methods. The Institute for Breeding Research on Fruit Crops of the JKI in Dresden has a long tradition and decades of years of experiene in sweet and tart cherry and pear breeding. The main topics of recent research are fruit quality and resistance to pathogens. These aims will be reached by traditional selection methods as well as by the development and application of new selection methods, e.g. marker-assisted selection. The project is aimed at the establishement of long-term cooperation in cherry and pear breeding to benefit from the experiences, the potential and the material from each other.
