Project code: 28RF3058
Contract period: 26.06.2017 - 31.07.2020
Budget: 255,271 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The aim of the research project is to develop an experimental prototype LED lighting system, which can be used in livestock husbandry (pigs and cattle) in areas requiring a high level of cleanliness and with low ceilings. The main focus will be on the development of a lighting system which can replace traditional fluorescent strip lighting. One feature the lighting system must deliver is a light spectrum suitable for both humans and animals and it must withstand the use of strong detergents and also corrosive gases. The areas of interest selected in the initial stages of this project are pig breeding and fattening, the milking parlour and other associated areas (feeding area and connecting walkways). These areas are being focused on because this is where there is a greater exposure to corrosive gases such as ammonia or those emitted by cleaning or disinfecting agents and these are a big challenge to the life expectancy of a LED. Using durable and energy-efficient LEDs, a system which will be resource-saving and modern in economic and ecological aspects will be developed. The work schedule includes five work packages and also the experimental development of an initial demonstrator which is not suitable for commercial use. The development includes all of the stages, from conception, through construction and technical realisation, to the technical and ethological validation via a demonstration experiment. The positive effect on animals health and welfare and also the improvement in the comfort and safety at the labour of the farmer are central points. The first two work packages deal with pig housing, the third one deals with dairy farming and the fourth concerns the area surrounding the dairy farm and pig housing. The fifth package includes the transfer of knowledge, coordination and project documentation.
