Phenotypization of nematodes with sensors (PheNeSens)

Purpose of research: Applied research
The project goal is to develop a digital detection tool for quantification and phenotyping of plant parasitic nematodes. The PheNeSens-Tool will combine an automatic image acquisition system and a computer based image analysis which will be able to detect and quantify specific life stages of nematodes and to characterise them according to body size, form and colour on a population level. Plant parasitic nematodes attack the roots of many crops and thus can be extracted from the soil. Quantification and characterisation of populations are obligatory requirements to assess the damage potential of plant parasitic nematodes. The PheNeSens tool will facilitate detection of population densities in soil and root samples. Additionally phenotyping nematodes will deliver data on the viability of individuals. The phenotypic characterisation of nematodes on population level to date is barely possible due to a very time intensive manual assessment of a large number of single individuals. Taking the newly developed image analysis system the phenotypic features of many individuals can be detected within a short period of time. Likewise the detection of population densities of plant parasitic nematodes to date si a time consuming process which will be reduced by the new technique.
