Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination

The European Commission’s Blue Growth agenda for the Baltic Sea Region identifies aquaculture as one of the most promising sectors of the region’s maritime economy in terms of growth and job potential. However, in the South Baltic area, aquaculture is not a widely established sector yet. The AquaVIP project aims to capitalise on this and be an innovator in the field. The project will focus on boosting education with the aim of producing a well-prepared labour force and creating business capacity in innovative aquaculture, and this is possible as the project partners have already displayed considerable efforts in capacity building in aquaculture competence and have previous experience with aquaponics, microalgae cultivation, RAS systems and building on previous projects.
The project is planned to be based on the outcomes of the AQUAFIMA and InnoAquaTech projects as well as on the SUBMARINER network project, in terms of careers development in the sector of modern aquaculture. AquaVIP will focus on: investigating best practices and exchange knowledge and experience related to human resource capacities for the aquaculture sector area’s blue and green economy, cooperation with partners and joint development of tailored solutions for boosting human resource capacities, testing innovative methods and tools, forming international networks with organizations pursuing the same mission, as well as experiencing the cross-sector cooperation possibilities in an international setting. All the activities and efforts aim at the development of an aquaculture labour market through the training of students and professionals in the sector, and ultimately expansion of the aquaculture market in the South Baltic area.
As a result of the project, the inhabitants of the South Baltic area will, in the long run, benefit from an increased and strengthened aquaculture job market and the sector itself in the region, as it will provide healthy, secure and regionally produced high quality food. The use of innovative environmentally friendly production technologies will also open new and international markets, providing further new jobs and blue-green growth in the South Baltic area.
