Measurement and modeling of N2O and N2 formation by denitrification in the deep vadose zone for site-specific estimation of nitrate degradation. (DeniDrain)
Project
Project code: 2822ABS033
Contract period: 01.04.2023
- 31.03.2027
Budget: 296,158 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The aim of this collaborative project is to determine the mitigation of nitrate inputs to groundwater by the degradation of nitrate to N2O and N2 by denitrification in the deep vadose zone. For this purpose, denitrification in samples from the drainage zone will be measured as a function of important soil properties and a model will be developed and parameterized. Typical sites in Germany with different thickness of the unsaturated zone will be investigated. The model description will also enable a site-specific assessment of nitrate degradation. Thus, the collaborative project will increase our knowledge of nitrate degradation and N2O and N2 production in the subsoil, especially from the deep vadose zone, and thus lay the foundation for land management that considers the turnover of nitrate in this zone.
