Purpose of research: Basic research

Purpose: Internally, this project module is the platform for the transfer of system understanding within the hydrology sector (C-projects) and the entire SFB program. Externally, it is the link to the international community of catchment- and eco-hydrology. Focus: The main focus is on understanding the dominant ecosystem processes as a prerequisite for predicting discharge and, at a later stage, element export from a catchment. We invite the owners/authors of catchment-scale models to make use of the unique data base of this hydrologically well-defined catchment. The models will/should differ conceptually and reflect the spectrum of today’s models suitable for predicting ungauged catchments. Ultimately, we intend to identify the backbone information (on processes) needed for making predictions. Approach: In the first round the participants will have access to the rudimentary data-base of the man-made Hühnerwasser-catchment (topography, soil characteristics, soil surface information, and sequencies of weather records and discharge. In addition, we provide the weather record for the recent period. This will be used for a first rough prediction of the resulting discharge. These predictions will be compared in a first workshop. Cost of improving the predictions: In a second round we provide information on internal subsurface structures, vegetation patterns, and a record of the remotely monitored temporal development of the surface water content. The latter mimics the situation of exploring ungauged catchments from airborne observation platforms. Within the time and resources constraints of the project we will provide additional information on catchment properties on request of the modelers. We expect them to account for all expenditures and personnel costs needed for making a second improved prediction. The improvement will be related to the costs for obtaining the additional information.
