Project code: 28RZ372032
Contract period: 08.08.2014 - 31.07.2017
Budget: 233,613 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Aim is the development (from conceptual design, over construction to the point of practical and functional test) of an intelligent LED light for the areas of 'feeding', 'resting' and 'walking' in dairy cattle barn. To capture the animal welfare and health, the animal behavior and hormonal parameters are used as indicators. The development is carried out with regard to the requirements of animal and human. The focus will be on the increase of the animal health, animal welfare and the efficiency by adapted and homogeneous lighting (light quantity – light control) as well as on selected LEDs with a light spectrum (light quantity) appropriate to the species. Furthermore the visual needs of the farmer (visual performance, comfort and ambience) should be considered in the development of the light. Work package 1: Data-recall facility to the market availability and survey of forward-looking farmers.Work package 2: Preparation of a catalog of requirements (legal, normative, photometric and safety-related requirements and maintainability). Work package 3: Simulation, draft and construction of the functional demonstrator ‘basic’ (selection and design of the LEDs as well as the thermal dimensioning of the heat sink). Work package 4: Photometric and thermal measurement and optimization of the light ‘basic’. Further optimization level if necessary after the first practical test. Work package 5: Construction of a small batch series with a maximum of 15 lights (assessment of demand using photometric simulation). Parallel planning and installation of the collection and monitoring media. After installation follow the photometric measurement plus the recording and analysis of the animal behavior. Work package 6: Definition of the types ‘premium’ and ‘deluxe’. Afterwards draft, construction and measurement of the functional demonstrator ‘premium’ and ‘deluxe’. Work package 7: Construction of a small batch series with five functional demonstrators. After installation following photome.
