Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination
The organization of the German National Fruit Genebank is realized with the aim to secure a long-term and efficient preservation of fruit genetic resources in Germany and to ensure their availability for research, breeding, fruit growing and landscaping. After the establishment of the fruit specific networks for apple, cherry and strawberry all cultivars were/ will be recorded pomologically and fingerprinted based on molecular markers. After the assessment of the data of the individual collections the co-ordination centre of the German National Fruit Genebank has to organize the duplicate for each cultivar. According the preservation guidelines each cultivar should be preserved at least at two different locations.
