Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

Long-term observations and capturing of forest structure parameters (e.g. tree species distribution, growing stock, deadwood distribution, regeneration, biodiversity, carbon stock) are needed to study the adaptation processes and reactions of forest ecosystems to climate change. Modern remote sensing sensors such as laser scanners and digital aerial cameras offer new opportunities for large-scale and detailed 3D reconstruction of forests. Airborne laser scanning is nowadays a well-known technique for the rapid and highly accurate 3D acquisition of geodata from an aircraft. Especially, the novel full waveform technology provides detailed information about the reflected laser signal. Moreover, digital aerial cameras are helpful to reconstruct the forest surface with high resolution and provide spectral information in the infrared for tree species classification. The research project focuses on a novel 3D tree segmentation method which is to be modified for the detection of dead wood and regeneration. As a final result, the CO2 stock of the forest area can then be estimated from the calculated biomass. Furthermore, the new 3D tree segmentation technique is to be extended for the application to large forest areas. Detailed validations studies will demonstrate the suitability for a comprehensive and cost-effective structural analysis of forest areas.
