Development and comparison of optimized cultivation systems for agricultural production of energy plants under different located conditions of Germany; Subproject 5: Influence of added water on the biogas yield of energy plants : A: System experiment; B: Acquisition of biomass performance of winter wheat

Project

Project code: 22018205
Contract period: 01.04.2005 - 31.12.2008
Budget: 250,865 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Influence of water supply on the raw material quality of crop mixtures - Besides monocultures, it is also considered to use crop mixtures (e.g. maize/sunflower) for the energy production from biomass in order to account for a greater biodiversity in agro-ecosystems. The aim of this project is to answer the question how interspecific competition at various levels of water supply does influence the composition of the harvest and consequently the quality of the raw material. Options of irrigation for the use of two crop harvests - In order to be cost-effective, energy crops must produce high dry matter yields. High biomass yields are achievable for instance by two crop harvests per year. In order to find out the chances and limitations of production systems with two crop harvests per year, field trials with and without irrigation are performed at various sites in Germany with different combinations of primary crops (e.g. winter rye, perennial ryegrass) and secondary crops (e.g. silage maize, sweet sorghum, sunflower)
