Breeding of potatoes for energetic use with improved resistance against late blight (Phytophthora infestans) for the production of highly utilizable biomass by using plant genetic resources and molecular marker techniques

Purpose of research: Applied research
The project aims at improving starch potatoes for bioenergetic purposes. Partially adapted breeding clones which exhibit high degrees of quantitative resistance to Phytophthora infestans and unadapted landraces with very high starch contents from the IPK Potato Genebank will be combined with current starch-potato varieties to obtain clones with very high starch contents and a durable resistance to P. infestans. This will pave the way to improve competitiveness of potato growing for biogas production, since reduced fungicide treatments are expected to amend sustainability of starch-potato growing in economic and ecologic sense. Molecular markers for resistance to late blight and for high starch contents shall be identified by a genetic association study. Furthermore the stock reaction of selected starch varieties will be tested under different storing conditions to identify the most economic conditions for a longterm storing. Altogether, the project is expected to generate a gain-of-knowledge which is needed to render starch-potato growing more competitive in relation to other established biomass crops.
The project is expected to provide information on the potential of late-blight resistant (Phytophthora in festans) potato breeding clones in contributing to sustainability in starch potato growing for a highly efficient production of bioenergy. In potato breeding, foliage-blight vs. tuber-blight resistance have to be considered as different traits. Results on the infestation of foliage and tubers under laboratory vs. field conditions have been obtained over 4 years (2012 to 2015) for 63 potato pre-breeding clones and varieties. Low maturity-corrected -rAUDPC values were obtained for the majority of JKI pre-breeding clones. Most of these clones were early or mid-early maturing.
