Purpose of research: Experimental development
The project aims at getting information on the genetics of resistance to blossom midges followed by the development of molecular markers which will facilitate the efficient use of this resistance in breeding programmes. The project will contribute to a reduction of insecticide sprayings and will minimize losses in yield and quality caused by these insects. Since the end of the 1990s an increase in the infestation of wheat by the orange wheat blossom midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana) has been observed in Europe, especially in the UK, and yield losses up to 30% were observed. In Germany blossom midges have gained evident importance during the last years as well, especially in northern Germany. The only alternative to spraying of insecticides is breeding of resistant cultivars. Due to severe problems to estimate the infestation of wheat with blossom midges correctly it is expected that no success will be achieved by phenotypic selection. Therefore, closely linked molecular markers will be developed in this project based on the analyses of doubled haploid lines facilitating efficient marker based selection procedures. Due to a reduction in insectizide sprayings, the project contributes to an environmental friendly wheat production and to consumer protection.
