Section overview
Description
The management of renewable and non-renewable resources is a pivotal issue for the existence of mankind. As a consequence of the high degree of urbanisation in the industrialised countries and in the emerging and developing nations, infrastructure systems have a central significance regarding the management of resources and environment. In order to ensure a sustainable development, research in this area has to consider spatial and temporal dimensions. Furthermore, the complex interdependencies require interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration. For example, trendsetting urban planning has to provide concepts for the areas of mobility, energy supply, water supply and disposal, raw materials management, waste disposal and processing and for groundwater protection. These policies have to be ecologically meaningful and, at the same time, they have to be economically efficient and socially acceptable. In addition to the urban areas of settlement, rural areas should be included into the cycle of resources. At the IWARU, an interdisciplinary team researches and develops policies, products and services for a sustainable use and management of the environment.
