Section overview
Description
In the present era of industrial (white) biotechnology, bioproduct processing is steadily gaining importance. Increasing amounts of high- and low-molecular products are produced from renewable resources by means of biotechnological processes. Later applications require highest purities of these products. Due to the partly enormous processing costs, separation technologies of increased efficiency have to be developed in order to fully exploit the potentials of biotechnology.
The Specialty Division for Bioseparation Engineering is dealing with all aspects of bioseparation engineering (Downstream-Processing) as well as its process integration. We focus on synthesis and selective functionalization of magnetic nano and micro adsorbers as well as the usage of High-Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS).
Our group works in newly equipped labs suited to use magnetic separation of bio-molecules in semi-technical scale besides the classical process engineering methods of cell disruption, filtration and preparative chromatography. For the development of innovative approaches for selective separation we work in strongly interdisciplinary teams with chemists, chemical engineers, biotechnologists and biologists and establish scientific and industrial partnerships.
