Purpose of research: Applied research

A focussed breeding of potato varieties for organic farming in Germany will be initiated by a network of organic farmers actively involved in the practical breeding process, potato breeders and research institutes dealing with potato. The project aims at combining low susceptibility against late blight with other positive resistance and quality traits in pre-breeding material. The utilisation of current molecular selection methods and the participation of the IPK Genebank ensure a purposeful and sustainable approach with the required genetic diversity. Recent varieties and breeding clones will be evaluated for their late-blight reaction under organic farming conditions. The selected genepool showing reduced late-blight susceptibility will be improved regarding essential quality and resistance traits. This will be assisted by conventional and molecular selection methods. By analysing the potato genepool with DNA markers a broad genetic characterisation of late-blight resistance within this breeding material will be achieved. The combination of classical and molecular breeding methods is used to pyramid different resistance genes and to combine them with quality traits too. The breeding material developed will be tested and selected for the main trait combinations under organic and conventional farming conditions. This approach results in the basic concept for a future breeding of clones adapted for organic potato farming. The selection of the trial sites ensures results applicable in organic farming. Yield stability in organic potato production and competitiveness of German potato breeding will be improved substantially. Molecular markers for traits of interest will gain a broad applicability and the agrobiodiversity of potato will be enlarged.
