Purpose of research: Applied research

Soil fertility depends largely upon humus content, which is important for nutrient and water storage as well as carbon sink. Humus is degraded by agriculture, so the return of nutrients and humus forming substances is essential for a sustainable use of agricultural areas. Objective of this long-term trial is to examine whether the agricultural production of maize silage and straw are sustainable in the conversion pathways biogas and biomass-to-liquid. A crop rotation is grown with and without removal of straw and with different levels of fertilisation. Surveys monitor humus content and fractions, soil texture, soil stability and biological activity. Changes in the soil characteristics will be verifiable after 10 years, so that a final evaluation of the long-term applicability is possible.
