Collaborative project: Rhynchosporium secalis resistance in barley - from mapping to marker development and pre-breeding material - Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2814100906
Contract period: 01.10.2007 - 30.09.2010
Budget: 176,776 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Aim of project is the development of molecular markers for the introgression of highly effective resistance genes against scald (Rhynchosporium secalis) into malting barley - and thereby the acceleration of the breeding process with validated and easy-to-score marker techniques as well as different resistance donors. The genetic diversity is based on different scald resistant donor lines from all over the world (e.g. Great Britain, Spain, Uruguay and Ethiopia) as well as the investigation of several independent scald resistance genes, e.g. Rrs1, Rrs2, Rrs13 and Rrs15. After mapping in several LfL DH populations and extensive sequence analysis for marker-development, a marker based breeding strategy in cooperation with barley breeders will be pursued to develop new scald resistant breeding lines to improve the resistance level in malting barley.
