Project
Project code: 3513 88 0100
Contract period: 01.04.2013
- 30.06.2014
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of the project is to develop approaches to promote legume cultivation, and to thereby increase the diversity in crop rotations to strengthen the agricultural biodiversity and to provide connected ecosystem services. To reach this goal, the area under legume crops in Germany should be extended. In the project, the following steps will be taken to contribute to this: collecting the existing knowledge on legume cultivation, assessing the contribution to nature conservation and the economic perspectives and gathering recommendations for stakeholders in a guideline.
Farmers will be offered bundled, practice-relevant information legume cultivation and will be motivated to grow them at tehir own farm. On the one hand, this will be achieved through demonstrations, inspiration and discussion on field days, on the other hand by offering handouts such as information on cropping systems for the various legumes, cultivation strategies for mixed crop cultivation and designing crop rotations as well as instructions for processing and utilization of legumes on farm. Simultaneously, information on how to further develop and support legume cultivation in Germany with the aim to increase agricultural biodiversity and ecosystem services will be provided for stakeholders such as advisory, research, policy, environmental associations, breeding, processing, etc.
